Fish for all

“Tavern of the Seas” as it has been known, Cape Town certainly has a culture of fresh seafood available at all times, and for all tastes. Tuna comes and goes depending on the seasons, but you can always get a good piece of hake and chips, especially at old school establishments like this one on Main Road Salt River. The hake will be deep fried, the chips will be genrously doused in salt and vinegar and the whole package wrapped in newsprint, ready to take away. Another interesting fish product is the one advertised on the window – “bokkoms.” This is essentially fish biltong, salted and sun dried mullet, hung up and sold in bunches, to be nibbled on from time to time. Bokkoms are a staple of the locals on the West Coast of South Africa. Please note: they are a bit stinky, so think twice before you buy some to hang up in your kitchen for snack time. If you are looking for other options in the fish zone, Cape Town can also dish up some of the fanciest flavours that the sea can possibly conjur. In conjunction with Cape Town’s finest chef’s of course! For example: crayfish, oysters, prawns, mussels, calamari, baby squid, tuna, scallops, sashimi, rock cod, musselcracker and the list goes on. How does this sound: “Orange fennel cured salmon on a bed of soy beans and pea shoots, topped with smoked salmon ice cream, crayfish minestrone and drizzled with a wasabi spring onion dressing.” Cape Town has something for everyone. Enjoy!
