Looking for a place to go for a breakfast in Cape Town? Look no further than the Roundhouse Restaurant. After three plus years on the fickle Cape Town foodie landscape, it is a veritable institution already. So the Roundhouse looks like it is here to stay. And well done to the team who boldly chose this iconic building in a “remote” location as their baby in which to launch a fine dining venue. It used to be a weekend hunting retreat, believe it or not. And when you look at the view, it makes sense. What a position! Tucked secretly into The Glen, completely protected from the prevailing Cape Doctor that howls through the rest of Camps Bay, it really is a gem.
And they have recently expanded their offering to include breakfasts, brunches and early evening sessions with a big accent on the family friendly dining experience. Complete with chickens clucking around your feet and a couple of snuffling pot bellied piglets, it creates a really relaxed and welcome atmosphere where kids can run riot and enjoy the open air vibe of the stepped lawns of the Rumbullion*. As do the picnic hampers with cutlery, the rustic breadboards with pencil and notepad on which to place your order.
*Rumbullion: “a riotous good time” circa 17th century. These terraces seek to re-create the philosophy of people sharing great food and fine wines in the most sensational outdoor setting, nestled under the 300 year old pomegranate trees on the landscaped lawns.
On the menu for breakfast is the usual high standard of pastries, ranging from fresh croissants, dangerously rich danishes and healthy muffins. Plus the cooked items such as eggs benedict (which is good by the way: excellent hollandaise sauce – always a benchmark), a full farmhouse fry up (also classy) and a healthy muesli, honey, yoghurt option too.
Then there is “suicide hour” session in the early evening, which is targeted at parents with young kids. Offerings include wholesome freshly made pizza and provides a welcome break in the routine of those who are usually bathing kids etc at home at this time.
Just one word of advice. Book in advance. Roundhouse Restaurant 021 438 4347.
