Guludo Beach Lodge donates 5% of its income to the Nema Foundation, which works with community members (approximately 15 000) and the local government. There is a focus on women and an emphasis on research and monitoring. The foundation addresses poverty and environmental degradation through projects with local communities focusing on education, health, enterprise and conservation.

Through their work with the community, the Nema Foundation has caused more children to attend school, increased the amount of scholarships for study at secondary school, built a primary school in Guludo and another village and established school farms in these villages. Nema has also gone to certain lengths to combat the prevalence and effects of malaria, HIV/AIDS, nutrition and other health concerns. Concerning enterprise, Nema has provided locals with employment opportunities and established a craft centre. Guludo Lodge adheres to its environmental policy. Nema conducts various conservation projects, such as Humpback Whale Research, Seafood Buyer’s Guide (promoting responsible purchasing of seafood within the hospitality industry), Reef Surveys, and Forestry and Agriculture (which includes school farms, kitchen gardens as well as plans to start work with local farmers to improve agricultural techniques and protect the coastal forest).

Ibo Island Lodge

The owners of fell in love with the island’s history, culture, pristine beauty and friendly people, and were determined to find a way to positively affect the lives of Ibo’s poverty-stricken community. After a difficult process of renovating three historic mansions on Ibo’s beachfront (materials, only in harmony with the natural surroundings, had to be transported by boat to the island), the owners could begin to create positive change, which included the establishment of the Ibo Island Community Centre and implementing a series of educational programmes and community projects.

believes that local communities must benefit from tourism development. The lodge employs approximately 30 permanent staff and sources food supplies and other services from Ibo itself. As employed community members are relied upon by their families, the lodge positively affects as much as 50% of the island’s population.

Community projects operated by the lodge include the tourism training project, the marine turtles research and conservation, the market garden agriculture project, the Montessori English School Project and the silversmith’s jewellers program, where traditional silversmiths create one-of-a-kind jewellery which is made possible by the distribution of high quality raw materials by Ibo Island Safaris.

Conservation is a major part of Ibo Island Lodge. The lodge focuses on conservation-oriented tourism training, aiming to reduce the local use of threatened resources. Combining loan finances and enterprise development support for small and medium sized enterprises, the lodge guards the spectacular biodiversity of the area and improves rural incomes.

With the owners of Ibo Lodge having been actively involved in safaris and tourism throughout southern and east Africa for more than ten years, the company’s experience helps to provide guests with an ultimate holiday experience – one that brings benefits to its community and environment.

Nkwichi Lodge and the Manda Wilderness Project

The Mchenga Nkwichi Beach on the shores of Lake was seen as the perfect spot on which to build a lodge and establish Manda Wilderness.

A hand-built lodge, Nkwichi offers visitors an experience of unspoilt Africa. Through responsible tourism, Manda Wilderness Project (MWP) ensures that this corner of Mozambique will remain in its pristine condition. The project has succeeded in helping to build primary schools, a clinic, roads and a luxury lodge dedicated to boosting responsible international tourism.

Working in partnership with the Nyanja people of northern Mozambique, MWP aims to balance community development with conservation through the creation of a sustainable wilderness reserve. The Manda Wilderness Community Game Reserve, through working with the local community, has been able to begin restoring an ecosystem that was destroyed during war years.

After receiving funding, an umbrella association (Umoji Association) was set up under Manda Wilderness and has become a legally registered association within Mozambique, providing communities with a platform from which to communicate with the Provincial and National Government.

With financial assistance, MWP was able to consolidate support from the Provincial Government, set up the Umoji Association and delimitate both the Community and the Conservation Area (120 000 hectares).
