Summer in Cape Town – Vaudeville
loading...
Looking for something different to do for an evening out? Look no further. Starting December 16 in the city centre is Vaudeville, a 300-seater supper club based in the centre of Cape Town offering spectacular burlesque performances over a superb three-course dinner. The lavish four act show compered by Irit Noble and described as “Marlene Dietrich’s 1930’s Berlin meets Tarantino” runs through from 20h15 – 23h00 six nights a week. If you had the pleasure of seeing Madame Zingara’s Tent of Dreams extravaganza, then you are going to love this. It’s low effort high reward. Just arrive. Dinner and a show. And it promises to be great.

It features, in true multi-genre vaudeville theatre tradition, an exceptional cast of local and international performers in a diverse display of burlesque, circus arts and global street entertainment embroidered with visual art and laser technology that interacts uniquely with the performance mix. The venue also incorporates the Moroccan-themed Fez Club so as to enable patrons to continue the party after each show.

At this point you are probably wondering what exactly is burlesque? Well, Wikipedia put it: “Burlesque is a humorous theatrical entertainment involving parody and sometimes grotesque exaggeration. In burlesque, performers, usually female, often create elaborate sets with lush, colorful costumes, mood-appropriate music, and dramatic lighting, and may even include novelty acts, such as fire breathing or contortionists, to enhance the impact of their performance. Put simply, burlesque means ‘in an upside down style’. Like its cousin, commedia dell’arte, burlesque turns social norms head over heels. Burlesque is a style of live entertainment that encompasses pastiche, parody, and wit. The genre traditionally encompasses a variety of acts such as dancing girls, chanson singers, comedians, mime artists, and striptease artistes, all satirical and with a saucy edge. The striptease element of burlesque became subject to extensive local legislation, leading to a theatrical form that titillated without falling foul of censors.”
Cost is R350 per person including 3 course dinner and the show.
