Stretching for miles along the border separating and runs one of the world’s largest freshwater lakes. Known as Lake Malawi on one side and Lake Niassa on the other, the lake’s crystal clear water forms the centrepiece of Mchenga Nkwichi Lodge.
As guests transfer their feet from the inside of their boat to the sand at Nkwichi Lodge, will they begin to understand how the lodge received its name. With sand like sugar – pure white and incredibly fine – the lodge is aptly named Mchenga Nkwichi – ‘the sand the squeaks’.
Situated on the shores of the beautiful Lake Niassa and surrounded by pristine wilderness, an exciting world both above and below water is ready to be explored. And if being active is the last thing on your mind, Nkwichi’s gorgeous beach provides the perfect location for relaxing. With a maximum of 14 people staying at the lodge at a time, guests can enjoy a holiday of peace and privacy.

By staying at Nkwichi Lodge, you are contributing towards the environment and the development of the community as the lodge practices . The lodge provides wages for over 75 local members of staff. Their salaries support up to 15 members of their direct families. This means that by staying at the lodge you will have an impact on the lives of over a thousand people.
Tucked away amongst the trees, six chalets each have their own unique design. Common to all chalets are enormous 4-poster beds made out of old tree trunks. The rooms are beautifully arranged and prepared so that guests can feel at home. En-suite bathrooms with bathtubs shaded by tree canopies and carved out of living rock guarantee a private experience where guests can feel at one with nature. Carved armchairs and hammocks provide the perfect spot for midday naps.

An exciting range of land and water activities will keep guests busy throughout their holiday. As the lodge is located at the foot of the escarpment in the Rift Valley, there are many fun trails to go on. An incredibly diverse bird life exists in the area, both indigenous and foreign, ensuring ample opportunities for bird watching.
The Likoma Island Tour takes guests to via a launch or dhow, where you learn of the community and local sites of importance, such as the historic St Peter’s Cathedral.
The beautiful Lake Niassa can be explored in numerous ways. Being one of the world’s cleanest lakes, swimming is a great way to do this. Rock pools along the lakeshore provide the perfect setting for snorkelling and exploring the lake. With over half the world’s cichlids swimming in the clear waters and numerous other varieties of fish, guests can enjoy exploring a brightly colourful underwater world. Alternatively, guests can opt to stay dry on board Miss Nkwichi – the lodge’s dhow, where they can explore local communities or deserted beaches. Another option is canoeing on Nkwichi’s Canadian style canoes, on which guests may spot playful otters and various water birds.
To get in touch with the animals inhabiting the surrounding wilderness, the Manda Wilderness Reserve, created in alliance with the local communities with the purpose of protecting the wildlife, offers beautiful varied settings in which to do so. Wildlife includes sable, elephant, reedbuck, leopard and over 300 species of birds. Guests can also embark on camping trips in the wilderness or they can camp on various spots along the lake. The experience will bring guests even closer to nature, whether they are lying in their tents and listening to the natural noises of the wilderness around them or dining on delicious fish caught fresh from the lake and gazing at the starry sky above them.
