Anticipated to be the most luxurious hotel in Southern Africa, the 3, 400 meter squared Eliakim Namundjebo Plaza Hotel in Windhoek, Namibia, is set to open its doors to local and international visitors in September this year.

Situated at the entrance of the Freedom Plaza, which lies in the heart of Windhoek’s CBD, the five-star hotel will enjoy panoramic views over the city, its surrounding mountains and the tree-lined pedestrian spine of the Plaza. The Freedom Plaza brings together retail and residential buildings in one energised location. Surrounding the Plaza is the Namibian Reserve Bank, Namibian Supreme Court, Windhoek City Council and a beautiful public park. One-third of the Plaza consists of community and tourist facilities, including a bus terminus, tourism kiosk, craft market and public squares.

Designed by Southern Californian-based sfa design, the award-winning firm believes that the hotel will serve as a premier, luxury destination in the region. President of sfa design, Kara Smith, has said that they key to the hotel’s design is to “simultaneously uphold a genuine sense of sophistication, incorporating enough classical elements to ensure that uniquely essential ambiance of a traditional, luxury hotel”.

There is no doubt that the hotel will be sophisticated. A casino will exist on the lower-ground level, a speciality restaurant, cocktail lounge, bar and terrace bar on the first floor, a traveler’s lounge, business centre, executive boardrooms and cigar bar on the upper levels and a gym, state-of-the-art spa, pool, health bar and garden terrace will on the rooftop.

It is an interesting development, but I wonder, is it really luxury hotels we need in Namibia. I think that most people going on tour to Namibia would be happier in a bed and breakfast and the business travelers make up a small group, and there are already lots of hotels catering for them.
