British newspaper and the world’s oldest Sunday newspaper, The Observer, declared the gorgeous Guludo Beach as the one of the top 20 deserted beaches in the world. Just as the Carter-Jones couple consider the surrounding community and environment in all their projects, so the lodge itself was built with this in mind. The lodge combines local materials with an innovative design, which brings together both traditional and contemporary styles. The rooms, known as bandas, are all positioned so that guests can lie comfortably in their gigantic king-sized beds while viewing the morning sun rising over the neighbouring Rolas Island.
There are four types of bandas; adobe bandas with magnificent views from the bed and the bathroom and a Swahili-inspired veranda, tented bandas which promise a close connection to the outdoors while also providing comfort and beautiful furnishings as well as an al fresco bathroom overlooking the beach, family bandas with two adjoining buildings ensuring parents close proximity to their children while allowing some privacy, and the Zala suite, set privately at the end of the lodge and ideal for couples seeking a holiday of romance.

At Guludo, there are four distinct regions for diving – the spectacular shallow coral gardens at Rolas Island, the gentle slopes and small ridges and famous dive site, ‘Rush Hour’ at Channel, a vast underwater sand bank and sheer drop offs at Zala Bank and the spectacular dive site at Ibo Island. The amazing number and variety of marine life at these spots contribute to Guludo’s phenomenal dive spots. This variety includes coral bommies, pipe fish, moray eels, sting rays, turtles, lion fish, batfish, big eye trevally, fusiliers, snappers, surgeon fish, Spanish mackerel, reef sharks and a diversity of reef fish.
Another popular water-based sport is snorkelling, and Rolas Island, with its crystal clear water and spectacular reefs are ideal for this. Also fun to do at Rolas is an excursion to Rolas Coral Rock Forest where visitors can view the famous and enormous coconut crabs. This trip can also take visitors to a simple shade in the middle of the island where a panoramic view presents the perfect opportunity for whale spotting (July to November). Following their responsible tourism policy, Guludo marine biologists are doing their bit to monitor the humpback whales and counter the various problems threatening their existence.

Another island worthwhile to visit is the incredibly interesting .
The Bush Lookout offers visitors a beautiful spot to relax and gaze into the National Park where one might spot elephants or even large cats. Also seen here are antelopes, primates and warthogs. Game or no game, the Bush Lookout offers a wonderful view, especially beautiful at sunset, and a place where visitors can gain perspective on the magnificence of their location.
Visitors taking a leisurely trip on board the lodge’s traditional dhow, Mustajabo, will also be treated to a phenomenal view of Guludo’s sunset.
Guludo Beach offers 12km of warm sandy carpet, providing the perfect setting for beach archery. Initially using archery sets to hunt mammals, staff now teach guests how to use these traditional bows and arrows.
Another stunning beach, Pangane Beach is only an hour’s drive north from Guludo. Decorated by palm trees, Pangane’s long white peninsular provides a wonderful spot to relax, and a fishing village and small market can connect guests to the local culture.
