Delightful Shandrani Mauritius
by Caro De Waal

I have been enlightened. If you have children, this is definitely the place to go!

We landed after a direct flight from Cape Town which had somewhat weird timing, as you get there late on the way in and leave really early to come back… but then again, to miss out a whole day going through Jozi and more kiddy drama than needed, it’s perfect.

So we fell into bed late after arriving a mere 10 minutes drive from the airport at our warm, welcoming and moon-filled destination…but only AFTER we got a couple of exciting cocktails in and basked in the happy warmth of our new home-for-a-week.

Shandrani is beautiful. Palm-filled gardens overlooking bright blue sea and a great feeling of spaciousness. The rooms are huge with massive beds and the BEST family add-on for babas, and toddlers alike. You can have up 4 of them in there! Score for mums and dads.

I HAVE to mention the food – it was really really good. Not your average mayo drenched buffet, no sirreee, there was a huge selection of asian, Mauritian and your general Western fare with something different everyday. The breakfasts were gargantuan and were not to be missed no matter what, with something for everyone and of course dripping in chocolate pancakes and the like for the kids. Beautiful fresh ingredients and serious flavour-punching food came in large and wonderfully diverse dishes for lunch and dinner had us choosing between five different restaurants…wow. Top-notch quality.

We all received a spa massage coupon which sent us to the tranquil and dream-like gardens of one of two spas – an experience one would like to have everyday, it’s juuuust a little pricey so we basked in the glory for that one lucky pampering and managed just fine with deck chairs and cocktails the rest of the time.

There’s kids clubs and swimming, beaches and boat rides, waterskiing, snorkeling and catamaran-ing, tennis and golf and and and! You can choose to chill by the pool or run around doing the many activities available everyday.

All-in-all…fantastic! And we can’t wait to go back. The all inclusive price is a MUST do as you don’t sit worrying about how much your coke cost and wait for it. PLUS there’s champagne on the menu!! Bring it on in buckets people.  I have to go back just for that as I’m currently pregnant and couldn’t take full advantage of the bubbly this time.
